South African singer, Tyla has issued a statement addressing her race (ethnicity).
Meanwhile, this comes after a controversial moment during her interview on The Breakfast Club.
Previously, the Grammy Award-winning artist was accused of not embracing her Black heritage after refusing to comment on her race.
Furthermore, in her statement, Tyla explained that she identifies as Coloured in South Africa and as a Black woman in other parts of the world, acknowledging the different classifications of race globally. Also, she emphasized that she understands the weight of the term “Coloured” outside of South Africa and accepts both identities.
Consequently, Tyla’s statement aims to put the controversy to rest, stating, “I’m both Coloured in South Africa and a Black woman.”
