Given the fierce and competitive nature of the Premier League, it is no surprise that referees are constantly reaching into their pockets to book players.
And with all those yellow cards handed out, it is a common sight to see players missing matches due to an accumulation of bookings.
But what exactly is the rule around yellow cards in the Premier League and when do they get reset?
Here is everything you need to know.
When do yellow cards get reset?
Once a Premier League player picks up five yellow cards, they are forced to serve a one-match suspension.
This rule is only in force for the first 19 Premier League fixtures – up until the midway point of the season.
This means that should a player pick up their fifth booking of the season after matchday 19, they will not have to miss a game through suspension.
However, reaching the 19th game of the season does not mean that players are let off the hook for the remainder of the year.
Any player who then receives their tenth caution, up to and including the 32nd game of the season, will be made to serve a two-game ban.
The 32nd round of Premier League fixtures is scheduled for the weekend of April 22, meaning that several players will be walking a disciplinary tightrope between now and then.
After matchday 32, players will no longer be suspended for picking up any more yellow cards.
Clubs are not allowed to appeal yellow cards – even if it results in a player missing matches as a result.
Yellow cards no longer carry over into the FA Cup and Carabao Cup, as had previously been the case in recent seasons.
However, players picking up a red card in any domestic competition (Premier League, EFL, FA Cup, Carabao Cup) will be forced to serve a one or three-match suspension in their team’s following games, regardless of the competition.
