COVID-19 Global Impact: WHO Confirms 775 Million Cases, Over 7 Million Deaths

The World Health Organisation (WHO) reported on Tuesday, August 13, 2024, that as of July 21, 2024, more than 775 million confirmed cases of COVID-19 have been documented globally, alongside over seven million deaths since the pandemic’s onset.

During the 28-day period from June 24 to July 21, the number of new COVID-19 cases and deaths rose by 30% and 26%, respectively. WHO noted that more than 186,000 new cases were reported across 96 countries, with over 2,800 new fatalities recorded in 35 countries during this time frame.

Additionally, data from 46 countries on COVID-19 hospitalizations and from 35 countries on ICU admissions revealed more than 23,000 new hospitalizations and over 600 new ICU admissions. Among the countries consistently reporting this data, there was an 11% increase in new hospitalizations and a 3% rise in new ICU admissions.
