The Armwrestling Federation of Africa (AFA) is set to unveil the host country for the much-anticipated 2025 Africa Armwrestling Championship.
The announcement, scheduled for January 15, has sparked excitement across the continent, with four nations—Cameroon, Nigeria, South Africa, Morocco and Ghana—vying for the honor.
Among the contenders, Nigeria has emerged as the frontrunner, bolstered by its vibrant sports infrastructure, passionate fanbase, and strategic positioning as a hub for West African sports. Insiders suggest that one of 5 States, with their rich history of hosting international events, could be the ideal city for the championship if Nigeria clinches the bid.
AFA President Charles Osei Asibey expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “Each of these nations has demonstrated remarkable commitment to promoting armwrestling. This decision will reflect our vision for the growth and accessibility of the sport across Africa.”
Ghana, the home base of AFA, has also presented a strong case, citing its experience in hosting the African Armwrestling Championship in 2018. South Africa, known for its world-class facilities, has emphasized its capacity to deliver a global-standard event. Cameroon, meanwhile, has highlighted its growing armwrestling culture and its ambition to elevate the sport in Central Africa.
For Nigeria, securing the bid would not only reaffirm its status as a sports powerhouse but also serve as a platform to inspire the next generation of armwrestlers.
“This championship would be a game-changer for Nigerian sports and a unifying force for the continent,” said Engr. Samuel Jackson, President of the Nigeria Armwrestling Federation.
The official announcement will be broadcast live on AFA’s social media platforms and other African sports channels, ensuring fans across the continent can tune in to witness this milestone decision.
All eyes are now on January 15, as the armwrestling community awaits the declaration of the host nation for one of Africa’s most prestigious sporting events.
