President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Ibrahim Gusau, has given assurances that the identity of the new Super Eagles coach will be announced very soon, following a meeting of the Technical Committee which took place on Tuesday.
Technical Director of the NFF, Augustin Eguavoen, took the reins of the Super Eagles in acting capacity, successfully guiding the team to qualify for the 2025 African Cup of Nations in Morocco following Finidi George’s resignation in June 2024, less than two after his appointment.
The NFF has been searching for a new head coach to take charge of the Super Eagles, with the twin objectives of securing qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and winning the forthcoming African Cup of Nations.
Gusau in a video by the federation, said the appointment will be made after the Technical Committee submits its report.
Nigerians will soon know who the new coach is. The technical committee met on Thursday to discuss the matter and we’re awaiting their report. Once we receive and approve it, we’ll make the announcement,” he said.
Gusau further added that the priority for the NFF was resolving the coaching situation swiftly, rather than focusing on the candidate’s nationality.
He said, ”There are white and black candidates being considered. We will wait for the recommendation of the committee, which is what we would look at as a board and decide. The basic thing is that it’s going to be very soon because we are all concerned and we want the new head coach to start immediately.”
In addition to guiding the team through World Cup qualification, Gusau disclosed that the incoming head coach will also oversee the CHAN Eagles during the 8th CHAN tournament, scheduled for February 2025: “The new Super Eagles coach, who will be announced soon, will be in charge of the CHAN Eagles as well,” he added.
