10 police officers were on Wednesday involved in a terrible accident while chasing a suspected “Yahoo Boy” (a term used to describe internet fraudsters) along the Benin-Sapele Expressway.
The officers, in two patrol vans, were in hot pursuit of the suspect, who allegedly refused to stop at a checkpoint and sped off in his Lexus RX 350.
The high-speed chase lasted over 15 minutes before one of the patrol vans lost control and collided head-on with another vehicle.
The second van veered off the road and flipped multiple times in an attempt to avoid the wreckage. Thankfully, no fatalities have been reported, but four officers are in critical condition, and the others sustained varying degrees of injury.
The suspect managed to evade arrest and is still at large.
The incident has sparked a mix of reactions on social media, with some supporting the police’s efforts to catch suspected criminals and others questioning the need for high-risk pursuits that put lives at stake.
