EPL: Liverpool seal thrilling opening day win at Anfield

by Our Reporter

Reigning champions Liverpool in Friday night defeated Bournemouth 4-2 in a thrilling opening game of the new Premier League season at Anfield.

Hugo Ekitike, signed this summer from Eintracht Frankfurt for an initial £69m, marked his first league start for Liverpool with a goal (37′).

Shortly after half-time (49′), Cody Gakpo doubled the lead before two impressive goals from Antoine Semenyo (64′, 76′) brought Bournemouth level.

Substitute Federico Chiesa scored late (89′) to restore Liverpool’s lead, before Mo Salah scored a fourth in added time (94′).

The Premier League opener had earlier been paused after Semenyo reported being racially abused by someone in the crowd.

What a very interesting match of football with so much drama, so much entertainment.

And it’s the eternal, ageless Egyptian Anfield monarch who finally seals what has been a see-saw match with more twists and turns than the Amazon River.

Endo pumped it forward aimlessly, Salah sizzled into a crossfield sprint to get to the ball ahead of sub James Hill.

He got there, protected it, cut into the area, worked a bit of space away from Hill, and slid the ball into the bottom-right corner past Petrovic.
