A former African Footballer of the year, Victor Ikpeba, has charged newly-crowned CAF’s Player of the Year, Ademola Lookman, to double his efforts to retain the award.
The Atlanta forward was on Monday crowned the 2024 POTY by CAF with continental football boss Patrice Mazembe and FIFA President, Gianni Infatino, presenting the award to him.
Reflecting on the feat achieved by Loookman, Ikpeba said: “I am happy for hiam and also proud that a Nigerian is taking over from another Nigerian just like Nwankwo Kanu and I did.
“But let me add that he is in a good position to retain it by working harder and be focused with high level of consistency. Muhammed Salah is still hot and Victor Osimhen is also doing great. He has work on his hands to ensure he retains the title.
“If Atalanta wins the Serie A title and do well in the UEFA Champions League, it will be good for Lookman to retain the title. That should be his target, the award is in the bag, he should aspire for more.”
Ikpeba said he was particularly thrilled that the decision of Lookman to switch allegiance to Nigeria has been good for him.
“He joined the Eagles only few years ago and has done well for himself and the country. Things can only get better for Nigeria. The Lookman award is a victory for us all,” Ikpeba added.
