2026 FIFA World Cup: Williams destined to lead Bafana Bafana, says Former Coach, Heredia

Ahead of South Africa’s 2026 FIFA World Cup opener against hosts Mexico at the iconic Estadio Azteca ON Thursday, former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper coach Alejandro “Alex” Heredia has praised captain Ronwen Williams as a “born leader,” insisting the Mamelodi Sundowns shot-stopper was always destined for greatness. Fresh off captaining Sundowns to CAF Champions League glory, the 34-year-old Williams is set to become the first goalkeeper to captain South Africa at a FIFA World Cup, a milestone Heredia says reflects years of consistency, resilience, and leadership shown since his teenage years.

Heredia, who helped introduce Williams into the national setup and backed him for his senior debut against Brazil in 2014, described him as “the full package” — an elite shot-stopper with exceptional game management and mental strength — while also warning that South Africa faces a worrying shortage of young goalkeeping talent unless reforms are made to goalkeeper development and opportunities in the PSL. Despite concerns over preparation and logistics ahead of the tournament, Heredia believes Williams’ leadership can inspire Bafana Bafana to make a strong impression on the global stage.
