Nigeria’s title defence has begun with a dramatic defeat in their opening Group C match against debutants Malawi.
After a goalless first half, Temwa Chawinga struck twice in the 73rd and 79th minutes.
Rasheedat Ajibade converted a penalty in the 90th minute, but Temwa scored again three minutes later to restore Malawi’s two-goal advantage. Uchenna Kanu pulled another goal back deep into stoppage time, but Nigeria’s late fightback fell short.
A major setback for the defending champions in their pursuit of a record-extending 11th WAFCON title.
Earlier, Zambia defeated Egypt 6-0 also in group C to send warning signal to Nigeria as the two sides meet on Saturday in the crunch preliminary tie.
It will be recalled that Tanzania also pip South Africa 2-1 on Sunday in another group encounter.
