She was 72 years old. The funeral service took place at the Fountain of Life Church in Ilupeju, Lagos, followed by a private interment at a vault in Ikoyi. Among the distinguished attendees was Peter Obi, former presidential candidate of the Labour Party. Onwenu was not only a celebrated musician with a string of hits but also a broadcaster, actress, politician, and activist. She is survived by her two sons.
