Super Eagles assistant captain, William Troost-Ekong, has made a confession at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon, revealing that Kenneth Omeruo was his idol before joining the team.

The statement came as a big surprise to many as the two players are now the spine of the national team’s defence in Cameroon.

According to the Watford of England defender, he has enjoyed pairing the Leganes of Spain star since the start of the AFCON.

“I think he’s been great; Kenneth is a fantastic player, he was a player I was looking up to before I joined the Super Eagles,” he said.

“He had won the AFCON at that time, I’ve enjoyed playing together with him, at the last FIFA World Cup in Russia, we played a game together as a back three, last AFCON I think we played the most games together so in that sense there is no surprises.

“There is not just me, there are other players and we have some fantastic players like (Chigozie) Awaziem, Leon Balogun who is not here obviously and we’ve got younger players as well so it’s up to the coach to make the selections.

“I enjoy playing with Kenneth, I think he’s fantastic defender so it makes it easy and I think we have a lot of options defensively and it’s keeping us all sharp and making us perform to our best.”
