Amad’s Last-Gasp Strike Earns Ivory Coast Winning Start At 2026 World Cup

by Our Reporter

Ivory Coast began their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a dramatic 1-0 victory over Ecuador, courtesy of a stoppage-time winner from Amad Diallo.

The Group E encounter appeared destined to become the tournament’s first goalless draw as both sides struggled to convert their chances. However, Amad emerged as the hero for the African side, striking in the 90th minute to secure all three points and spark celebrations among the Ivory Coast supporters.
Ecuador will feel unfortunate to leave the match empty-handed after creating several promising opportunities throughout the contest. The South Americans came closest to breaking the deadlock in the first half, striking the crossbar twice and repeatedly testing the Ivorian defence.

Despite Ecuador’s attacking threat, Ivory Coast remained resilient and gradually grew into the game. Their persistence was ultimately rewarded when Amad capitalised on a late opportunity to score the decisive goal and hand his side a winning start to the tournament.
The result moves Ivory Coast level on three points with Germany at the top of Group E. Germany currently lead the standings on goal difference following their emphatic 7-1 victory over Curaçao on Sunday.

With one matchday completed, the victory gives Ivory Coast an early advantage in the race for qualification to the knockout stages, while Ecuador face increased pressure to secure a positive result in their next group fixture to keep their World Cup hopes on track.
